About: Gold plated, gold vermeil & solid gold:

Gold Plated:

KRWND’s gold plated items are well above the industry standard. Unless stated otherwise in the product description, the majority of our gold plated items are specifically gold plated stainless steel. As of June 2020 all but 4 of our gold plated items now use a surgical grade stainless steel and undergo a specialty gold plating process. A select few of our gold plated items are gold plated sterling silver (vermeil) or gold plated brass. Our stainless steel items will not rust, corrode or tarnish with exposure to water and will not oxidize with exposure to air. While stainless steel will never rust or tarnish, with time and wear, all gold plated jewelry items will eventually lose it's colour, luster/shine and will need to be re-plated.  For more information on our plating service please email

Our gold plated stainless steel items will not tarnish or rust and are shower safe. However, they are not to be worn in chlorine or salt water. After exposure to water, it is important to pat our items dry thoroughly and do not let it air dry (this will preserve the shine over time). While stainless steel will never rust or tarnish, with time and wear, all gold plated jewelry items will eventually lose their colour, luster/shine and will need to be re-plated. Silver stainless steel will never need to be re-plated and will never lose it’s colour since silver is the natural finish of stainless steel. With proper care, our gold plated stainless steel items should last 1-3 years before needing to be re-plated. If your gold plated item fades within the first year we will re-plate it for free.

Benefits of stainless steel:

Although there is no absolute guarantee that wearing stainless steel causes no allergies, stainless steel is the recommended metal for people with sensitive skin (I.e piercing jewelry).
Stainless steel is also considered to be a sustainable and eco friendly metal as it is 100% recyclable as it is not coated with any toxic material and it does not produce toxic run-off.  Its impact on the environment is minimal when compared to other jewelry materials as it continues to be re-used and recycled.

Gold Vermeil:

Gold vermeil (pronounced: vermay)is considered semi-fine jewelry. Semi-fine jewelry is the category that bridges the gap between fine jewelry and costume jewelry. Gold vermeil specifically uses authentic 925 sterling silver (a fine metal) as the base metal and uses a thicker layer of gold than normal gold plating. To be considered gold vermeil, the item must adhere to a certain industry standard of gold plating and contain a certain amount of gold plating.

While gold vermeil items are considered semi-fine jewelry due to its use of genuine sterling silver, gold vermeil items require care & cleaning since sterling silver naturally oxidizes over time with exposure to air. Sterling silver is known to get darker in colour and is susceptible to tarnish if it is not cleaned regularly. Gold vermeil is NOT shower safe like our gold plated stainless steel items.

With proper care, these items can generally last 1-3 years before needing to be re polished and re-plated. For more information on our plating service please email Please note our 'Message Medallions' and 'Signature Signet Rings' are the only items in our shop that are gold vermeil.

Solid Gold (10k-24k):

The karat number of a piece of jewelry indicates what proportion of it is made up of gold. Pure gold is 24K, meaning that all 24 parts out of 24 are pure gold. This type of gold is not used often in jewelry because pure gold is a soft and malleable metal that tends to bend, dent or scratch very easily. This makes pure 24k gold can be impractical for daily wear and are better suited for heirloom/special occasion pieces. To improve durability, gold is mixed with other metals before it’s crafted into jewelry. The gold’s purity is measured using the karat system, which measures the ratio of pure gold to secondary metals.

  • 10k  gold is made up of 41.7% gold and 58.3% alloy, or 10 out of 24 parts are made with pure gold.
  • 14k gold is made up of 58.3% gold and 41.7% alloy, or 14 out of 24 parts are made with pure gold.
  • 18k gold is made up of 75% gold and 25% alloy, or 18 out of the 24 parts are made with pure gold.
  • 24k gold consists of 99% gold with 24 out of 24 parts of the metal being pure gold.

Jewelry Care

Jewelry is delicate and requires care and maintenance in order to maximize its wear. It is important to note that the only pieces that will not fade, can be worn in water and can last a lifetime are solid gold items (10k-24k). With time and wear, all gold plated jewelry items will eventually lose its colour, luster and shine and will need to be re-plated. It is also important to note that individuals with higher levels of acidity in their skin will cause a quicker fading reaction on gold plated items. Every KRWND piece comes in a jewelry box or jewelry duster bag with a polishing cloth and care instructions. The most important steps you can take to preserve your piece is:

1.  Do not let your piece come in direct contact with any type of liquids such as lotion, oils or perfumes. Do not wear you piece in chlorine/salt water. While our gold plated stainless steel items are shower safe, it is important to thoroughly dry your piece after it gets wet to preserve its shine/colour. Do not let the item air dry.  After showering, make sure there is no soapy residue left on the chain.

2. Regularly wipe your piece down with the polishing cloth provided to remove any natural oils left from your skin. This is the most important step you can take as the acidity & perspiration from your skin can strip the jewelry's plating.

3. Remove pieces before strenuous activity and store your item the same way you received it in the jewelry box or the jewelry bag. This keeps the item protected and prevents tangling or friction to the surface.

Our pieces are made & tested to last 1-3 years before needing to be re-polished/re-plated. However, it is important to note that everybody's skin reacts differently. Individuals with higher levels of acidity in their skin will cause a quicker fading reaction on plated items. If your piece fades within the first year, we will re-plate it for free.
