ABOUT

These waist chains are inspired by traditional African waist beads
and named after the Yoruban goddess Oshun (pronounced Oh•shoon). Oshun is associated with fertility, love, and sensuality. Her colours are hues of gold and yellow and one of her offerings is honey. In images, Oshun is always depicted as being dressed in gold, covered in jewels and holding a pot of honey.

Waist chains are a body positive adornment and are for everyBODY. Traditionally, women of all shapes and sizes confidently adorn themselves with waist beads. Wearing waist chains is a reflection and appreciation for your natural body and beauty. Waist beads have been worn for centuries by women in many West and East African cultures and are made with tiny colourful beads and charms. In Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and other West African countries, waist beads are a symbol of femininity, fertility, sensuality, and spiritual well-being.

Today women all over the world wear waist chains for aesthetic and practical purposes. To read more about the meaning, significance and uses of African waist beads check out these articles "The African Waist Beads", 'Waist Beads for Body Awareness' and 'Age-old tradition makes modern-day statement'.

HOW TO MEASURE

  • Waist chains are custom made to fit your body. Your waist chain measurement should be your waist measurement + 1in. For example, if your waist is 30 inches, your waist chain measurement would be 31 inches. Include your waist chain measurement in the 'notes' section at checkout.
  • Waist chains are made adjustable with a 5 inch chain extender and can only be adjusted to fit looser/bigger, not smaller/tighter. If you want to be able to make your waist chain smaller/tighter, provide a smaller measurement.
  • Consider where you want your chain to sit based on comfort and functionality. Waist chains can be worn anywhere between your waist and lower hip. A good rule of thumb for fit is there should be a 2 finger width of space between the chain and your skin.
  • Be sure to measure against bare skin. Watch this video for extra help on measuring.
