Here at KRWND we work with gold plated, gold vermeil and solid gold (for a detailed description of each, see below). Our gold plated and gold vermeil pieces are all made from various base metals such as stainless steel, brass and 925 sterling silver (NO nickle or lead content). Please read and review each product description thoroughly so you are fully aware of the material breakdown before purchasing.

Each KRWND pieces comes in a jewelry box or a jewelry duster bag with a polishing cloth and care instructions. See below for step by step instructions on how to handle your piece after each wear.

What is the difference between gold plated, gold vermeil, gold filled & solid gold?

Gold Plated

KRWND’s gold plated items are well above the industry standard and use surgical grade stainless steel as the base metal. All of our gold plated stainless steel items are anti tarnish, rust proof and water resistant.

Please note that water resistant does not mean waterproof. Water resistant means the item can get wet occasionally and the metal will not rust/tarnish but it is not suitable for constant water submersion. Constant water submersion will cause the plating to become dull.

Our gold plated stainless steel items are shower safe but do not wear in chlorine or salt water. After exposure to water pat the item dry thoroughly and do not let it air dry. With time and wear, all gold plated jewelry items will eventually lose its colour, luster and shine and will need to be re-plated. With proper care, our gold plated stainless steel items should last 1-3 years before needing to be re-plated.

Stainless steel is a "green" metal, 100% recyclable and safe for most people with sensitive skin. It does not rust, corrode or tarnish with exposure to water and it does not oxidize with exposure to the air.

Gold Vermeil

Gold vermeil (pronounced: vermay)is considered semi-fine jewelry. Semi-fine jewelry is the category that bridges the gap between fine jewelry and costume jewelry. Gold vermeil specifically uses authentic 925 sterling silver (a fine metal) as the base metal and uses a thicker layer of gold than normal gold plating. To be considered gold vermeil, the item must adhere to a certain industry standard of gold plating and contain 2.5microns of gold plating.

While gold vermeil items are considered semi-fine jewelry due to its use of genuine sterling silver, gold vermeil items require care & cleaning since sterling silver naturally oxidizes over time with exposure to air. Sterling silver is known to get darker in colour and is susceptible to tarnish if it is not cleaned regularly.

With proper care, these items can generally last 1-3 years before needing to be repolished and replated. Read below for more information on our replating service.

KRWND’s 'Message Medallions' and 'Signature Signet Rings' are gold vermeil and come with a 1 year warranty on the plating.

Solid Gold (10k-24k):

The karat number of a piece of jewelry indicates what proportion of it is made up of gold. Pure gold is 24K, meaning that all 24 parts out of 24 are pure gold. This type of gold is not used often in jewelry because pure gold is a soft and malleable metal that tends to bend, dent scratch very easily. This makes pure 24k gold quite impractical for daily wear. To improve durability, gold is mixed with other metals before it’s crafted into jewelry. The gold’s purity is measured using the karat system, which measures the ratio of pure gold to secondary metals. 10K gold is 10 parts pure gold mixed with 14 parts other metals. 10k gold consists of 41.7% pure gold. 14K gold is 14 parts gold mixed with 10 parts other metals. 14k gold consists of 58.5% pure gold. 18k gold consists of 75% gold and 24k gold consists of 99% gold. 24k gold jewelry is occasionally used as an investment or for a heirloom piece.

Jewelry Care

Jewelry is delicate and requires care and maintenance in order to maximize its wear. It is important to note that the only pieces that will not fade, can be worn in water and can last a lifetime are solid gold items (10k-24k). With time and wear, all gold plated jewelry items will eventually lose its colour, luster and shine and will need to be re-plated. It is also important to note that individuals with higher levels of acidity in their skin will cause a quicker fading reaction on gold plated items. Every KRWND piece comes in a jewelry box or jewelry bag with a polishing cloth and care instructions. The most imporant steps you can take to preserve your piece is:

1. Refrain from wearing your piece in the water, do not wear it in chlorine/salt water. While our gold plated stainless steel items are shower safe, it is important to thoroughly dry your piece with a towel or cloth. Do not let the item air dry. Remove necklaces when washing your face. Avoid direct contact with any type of liquids such as lotion, oils or perfumes.

2. After each wear, gently wipe your piece with the polishing cloth provided to remove any natural oils left from your skin. This is the most important step you can take as the acidity & perspiration from your skin can stripe the jewelry's plating. Gold plated, gold vermeil and gold filled items will all lose their lustre and begin to fade over time as they come in contact with the oils and acidity in your skin.

3. Remove pieces before sleep or strenuous activity. When not in use, store your item the same way you received it in the jewelry box or the jewelry bag. This keeps the item protected and prevents tangling or friction to the plated surface.

Our pieces are made & tested to last 1-3 years before needing to be re-polished/re-plated. However, it is important to note that everybody's skin reacts differently. Individuals with higher levels of acidity in their skin will cause a quicker fading reaction on gold plated items. This is due to the presence of sulfur/sulfides and amino acids in your perspiration an natural skin oils. The acidic nature of your sweat can cause a chemical reaction between the acidity and the plating and lead to discolouration.
